1 comment:
Paul develops his explanation of salvation, he uses three important terms, each helping us understand a different aspect of what Christ has accomplished.
• Justification comes from the language of the courtroom. It addresses our guilt before a righteous Judge.
• Redemption comes from the language of captivity and slavery. It addresses our bondage to sin and the price paid for our freedom.
• Propitiation, which Paul introduces in the next verse, comes from the language of sacrifice. It explains how Christ's sacrifice deals with God's righteous judgment against sin.
Together, these truths reveal the depth of God's provision for sinful humanity. God has not overlooked our sin, abandoned His holiness, or lowered His standard of righteousness.
Instead, through Jesus Christ, He has provided the means by which guilty sinners can be justified, those enslaved by sin can be redeemed, and His righteous judgment against sin can be satisfied.
The righteousness God requires is the righteousness He makes available through Jesus Christ.
