Homiletics My Weekly Process

Doing My Homiletics

I find that when I first start the week’s lesson that it is good to also print out a copy of the scripture and mark the scripture as I complete the week’s questions. When I start my homiletics I have already identified content, keywords and have started forming my divisions.  I start my time doing formally doing homiletics with prayer.

Homiletics Process Flow
I start at the top of my form and do the Divisions with content (a), (b), (c), (d).  I move through the divisions and at that point I have my divisions and content.  The Subject Sentence is just taking the division sentences extracting the words and building a 10-word sentence that describes what I have just finished.  The Aim is what I would want the men to learn if I were to teach from this outline.  The Application questions are meant for me to challenge me in my life.  If these questions challenge me then they may also challenge other.

I add a couple of other things that you don't need to do in your homiletics.  However I have been lead to also add another three items… The Principles just like your teaching leader would be sharing with your during the lecture.  I also add the Characteristic of God that I see as part of the lecture.  We are asked this, in a way on the 6th day, and I want to formalize this.  For years our teaching leader in Los Gatos, CA asked us to look for the characteristic of God in each weeks lesson and I think this is important.  The last item is the Theme of the lesson and this highlights the theme God has for me as I learn from the scripture.

Blessings to you as you dig into the scripture each week to do your homiletics.
