Jesus’ Challenge: Feeding a gathering crowd (John 6:1-9)

1. A great crowd followed Jesus seeing signs Jesus performed… healing sick (1-2)

2. Jesus went up on a mountainside sitting down with disciples (3-4)

3. Seeing the crowd approaching asks Philip where shall we buy bread to feed these people? A test of Philip (5-6)

4. Philip responded with the enormity of the cost to feed with just a little bite (7)

5. Andrew spoke up sharing a small resource… a boy with 5 barley loaves and 2 small fish (8-9)

 

Jesus’ Solution: Miraculous feeding of loaves and fish with abundance. (John 6:10-15)

1. Jesus instructs disciples to have people sit down on the grass (10)

2. Jesus blessed what they had; loaves first and then fish, then distributed as much as each wanted (11)

3. Jesus said to the disciples to gather the left-over pieces not to allow waste (12)

4. Disciples gathered 12 baskets with pieces of barley loaves from leftovers (13)

5. The people seeing the sign began to recognize Jesus as prophet; Jesus knowing intensions withdrew by himself (14-15)

Unexpected Jesus: Disciples witness Jesus in turbulence coming to them walking on water (John 6:16-21)

1. Evening the disciples went down to lake getting into a boat set off to Capernaum without Jesus (16-17)

2. About 3 or 4 miles out a wind came up and water grew rough (18-19a)

3. Disciples see Jesus approaching boat walking on the water and become frightened (19b)

4. Jesus calms their fears saying “don’t be afraid” and they take Jesus into the boat. (20-21)
